Our music received two 2009 Parents’ Choice Awards and 5 out of 5 stars by the national parent group, Common Sense Media.
It’s not uncommon for teachers and parents to assume rap is “just an urban thing” that won’t work with their students. We’re here to dispel the myth!
In commercial music, hip-hop and rap continue to be the top selling musical form amongst all races of ‘tweens, teens, and young adults. With the popularity of rap, many students gravitate to it as the more popular form of music for academic-based learning.
In fact, some of our biggest success stories come from small-town schools in Texas, Georgia, and Tennessee and suburban schools in Massachusetts and Illinois. Using rhythms and rhyme to teach is most definitely not an urban thing.
RRR music is built around federal and leading state guidelines for academic assessment. See our State Standards for a breakdown by grade in adoption states and other representative areas.
Despite well-known, successful education music programs, mnemonic devices and teaching methods involving music and culture are a largely untapped area in the education field. We aim to change that.
It is generally known and accepted that students will become engaged if information is presented in a format or style that they are familiar with or derive some personal enjoyment from. Using programs and approaches that appeal to multiple student learning styles and strengths will help all students perform well. Special needs and special education teachers have seen profound results with their students, and RRR’s songs also work well as part of an ESL/ELL curriculum. See our Research page for additional support and links.
Music has been an effective and popular means of engaging students and presenting information for decades; Sesame Street®, School House Rock®, and the “ABC Song” are prominent examples of such learning. Now, as KFBK radio said, we’ve “taken the School House Rock® concept and updated it for an older child.”*
Students who may feel shy or disenfranchised because of social, cultural, or economic backgrounds will feel more comfortable and engaged when a familiar form of communication is used to present information. Students less confident with language or written skills respond with greater enthusiasm to an appealing aural delivery using a culturally relevant method. RRR’s music, with content-rich lyrics and lively rhythms, allows students to enjoy and relate to one another while learning important information.
Our music is less expensive than other supplementary educational materials and can be streamed to any computer or downloaded. Every song is available in four appealing versions (also called “scaffolding”), which help with learning and performance: the original, Downtempo (slowed down), Recall Track (missing words from the vocals), and Instrumental Tracks allow teachers and students to explore different ways of reinforcing learning.
We believe that sharing is an important way to learn new techniques and methods. We are continually developing lesson plans, games, puzzles, and other ancillary materials for use and asking teachers and students to submit their ideas, plans, and practices that worked the best for them! We also keep a list of resources we find elsewhere online, most of which are free.
Show your creative talents by sending us ideas that have worked for you. We will spotlight the most innovative and successful ways on our website. Kudos for you and your school!
